Glaucoma Checkup
Glaucoma is a disease which damages the optic nerve — initially damaging your peripheral vision — it is often associated with increased intraocular pressure. Those most commonly affected by glaucoma are aged over 40, nonetheless the disease can transpire at any age. If the disease progresses, permanent vision loss can occur, therefore early detection will be the best weapon against glaucoma.
A glaucoma test is usually part of a routine eye exam, and you can share your concerns with our experienced optometrists and technicians. Hope Island Optical uses the latest equipment to detect and treat glaucoma. You do not have to live with the disability caused by glaucoma.
Macular Degeneration Checkup
Macular degeneration (or age related macular degeneration) is a form of retinal degeneration which typically affects the older population (greater than 60 years old). The disease is currently the most prevalent cause of blindness in the world.
Risks of developing the disease may include age, genetics, smoking, diet and diabetes, although many people aren’t aware they have the macular degeneration. It’s important to have regular eye examinations and seek specialist advice at the first signs of the disease.
There are two types of macular degeneration (AMD):
Dry
This is a slower, more progressive type of macular degeneration in which the layers of the macula slowly wear down. There is no direct treatment for dry macular degeneration, however in this case, taking antioxidant supplements in conjunction with good diet and exercise can prolong good health of the macula, slow progression and maintain vision.
Wet
This is usually a sequel to dry AMD, where the fluid or blood interferes with the layers of the macula. Wet AMD can cause sudden drops in vision usually requiring intravitreal injections to help reabsorb the fluid and recover vision. This is a very effective and successful treatment of AMD, although many treatments may be required.
Hope Island Optical optometrists are specialised in diagnosing, treating and monitoring the progression of macular degeneration.
Genetic Testing for Glaucoma & Macular Degeneration Risk
Hope Island Optical now offers advanced genetic risk testing for glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) through our partnership with Seonix. This simple, saliva-based test provides personalised insights into your genetic likelihood of developing these conditions - or, if you already have them, the potential for progression.
The SightScore™ test analyses millions of genetic variants in your DNA to generate a polygenic risk score. This score compares your genetic risk to others in the community with similar ancestry and helps our optometrists understand factors that traditional eye exams alone cannot detect.
This information allows us to create a more tailored eye-care plan for you. Depending on your results, we may recommend more frequent monitoring, earlier specialist referral, or specific lifestyle steps to help protect your vision. It is especially valuable if you have a family history of glaucoma or AMD, or if you simply want a more complete picture of your long-term eye health.
The process is quick and non-invasive. We collect a small saliva sample here at the practice (or provide a kit), which is sent to Seonix Bio’s laboratory. Results are usually available within 4–6 weeks and will be explained to you by one of our experienced optometrists in the context of your full eye examination and imaging results.
